Hiking in early fall in an unfamiliar area of the sprawling Niagara Escarpment, we spotted what looked like a doorway off in the distance and went to explore. It was the half-wall of a long demolished mill, with this enticing portal beckoning.
Up closer, with the sun behind the wall, it was the door to another world: Narnia perhaps or something scifi. There are hundreds of surprises like this as you hike the massive Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
You can still see some of the waterside stone work from the original mill (useful as stepping-stones through the site)
This post is for Mundane Monday – Portal, hosted here.
The escarpment (protected and beloved) is an endless source of getaways and peace. I used to live directly under the escarpment in the city of Burlington, and now live in the town of Collingwood, up on Georgian Bay.
