The Palace of the Popes in Avignon, France now has endless, connected, largely empty rooms. But here and there, vestiges remain of its former glory as a fortress and papal residence, the seat of Western Christianity during the 14th century. I was taken with this beautiful icon (origin and subject unknown to me, as I don’t read Latin). For Tuesdays of Texture, hosted by Narami on De Monte Y Mar.
Haven’t been there for some years, but it’s quite an impressive place!

Yes it is. It’s truly huge, but even empty, it’s possible to see how it would have been at its height of power.

Thank you Kim, it’s a gargantuan place, a reminder of the power of the papacy even that far back. Well worth seeing.
