The ancient Vaucluse region of France includes the charming town of L’Isle sur la Sorgue, nicknamed the Venice of Provence for the canals cut through its medieval neighborhoods by the River Sorgue.
One of the dozens of waterwheels once used for the silk trade, some still spinning on the side of narrow streets.
The town is the site of a year round week-end antique market with 300 or more stalls, which open rain or shine. The day we visited we had the experience of rain combined with the Mistral, the breath-sucking wind that blows down the Rhone Valley from the mountains.
The town is beautiful in any weather, though, and only one of many memorable villages in the Vaucluse region.

Petrarch lived here for a time and an admirer of his poetry named his estate Vaucluse in Sydney, NSW. Visited in January.
