The heat was stifling under the protective tenting, but the Roman history coming to life in layers at the Viminacium archeological dig in Serbia was unique compensation. (For A to Z Challenge: Letter A)
Just inland from the Danube River, near the Serbian town of Kostolac, the important military encampment was discovered in the 1880s but was mostly dormant as a dig until the last decade. The site dates to the 1st century AD, during Hadrian’s rule (117-138).
It’s easy to find videos, trip reports and official information on Viminacium. But nothing compares with walking these ancient grounds, history coming to life around you.
